on specifics. >> he says that he's going to close deductions and loopholes for his tax plan. that's how it's going to be paid for but we don't know the details. he says that he's going to replace dot frank, wall street reform, but we don't know exactly which ones. he won't tell us. he now says he's going to replace obama care. at some point i think the american people have to ask themselves, is the reason that governor romney is keeping all these plans to replace secret because they are too good? is it because somehow middle class families are going to benefit too much from them? >> let me bring in nick khristoff. let me read one of your many tweets last night, nick. obama is such a gifted speaker but tonight he seemed passive, distracted and defensive. what happened? >> i mean n a word, he blew it. it is not the same as blowing a campaign. i think part of it was expectations and romney did much better than expectations. but beyond that, he let romney get away with accusing him of being the one who is undecided on big banks, on being the one who would let people lose their health in

different questions -- >> i'm going to call him a liar now. no. talking about the tax plans at the rallies. he was saying the same things on wednesday night and the other piece about how -- >> let me stop you there. i want to read to you if i can about a fact check about the tax. not cutting taxes for the wealthy. in the primary, cut taxes for everyone including the top 1%. suspect that a change? >> no, it's not. he's been saying the entire time that while he would be in favor of an across the board tax cut of 25% for every taxpayer, those making over a certain amount of money he would close tax loopholes so their overall taxes that they pay and the overall tax plan would be tax neutral. i mean, it would be revenue neutral. the other piece is you mentioned this other story -- >> the story is specifics, hasn't it? >> i'll keep going back to this to seep the record straight. you all talking about this story that mitt romney had been saying and reported in other places that this is a new softer side of mitt romney. he's been telling that story for months. and so, i mean, this is all j

being less than honest about his tax cut plan. >> governor romney decided instead of changing his plan he just pretended it didn't exist. what $5 trillion tax cut? i don't know anything about a $5 trillion tax cut. pay no attention to that tax cut under the carpet. >> romney's campaign continuing a blitz of ohio today denying that he's a new moderate but here is what he told the des moines register yesterday. when asked about his agenda on abortion. >> there's no legislation regarding -- with regards to abortion i'm familiar with that would become part of my agenda. >> joining me now, "usa today's" washington bureau chief susan page and "time" assistant managing editor. good morning, both of. >> did you good morning. >> susan, romney's statement appeared to be away from the democrats tried use against them and campaign quickly issued a statement saying mitt romney is pro-life. what is going on with the romney message? >> well, i think romney is -- governor romney is definitely trying to pivot to the middle. we were waiting to do this last spring and early summer when he clinched t

lowering taxes because growth is not on track. guess what? the unemployment number is ticking down. that blunts that argue am. i think the president has to come out strong with his arguments around investment and education and keep that momentum flowing. . >> let me give you some of the reaction that's been coming in. mitt romney's campaign issued a statement saying this is not what a real recovery looks like and he will create 12 million jobs. then this is what david plouffe had to say just a short time ago on chuck's show. >> i don't think we should focus on the politics today. this is obviously showing we continue to recover from a horrible recession. the recession wasn't an accident. there were policies and reasons that contributed to it. and, you know, reckless wall street behavior, tax cuts for the wealthy unpaid for. these are the same policies mitt romney wants to return to. >> so what does the president do with this? he's about to speak in virginia in the next hour. >> i don't tell the president what to do. look, these numbers show some signs of hope. it's time for both ca

buried. they're being burieded by regulatio regulations, taxes, by borrowing. they're being buried by the obama administration's economic failures. >> major, does joe biden's statement, this video, do either play into the debate tonight? >> i don't think the video is going to play into the debate. you look at what pollsters find from surveying voters, they want to nope, especially tonight, what is your characterization of president obama, what's you've done for four years, mitt romney and what are you going to do going forward. i do not expect this to be about a video from 2007. i think if romney were to do that, it would be a strategic mistake. as for paul ryan, this has been part of a romney campaign tendency. everything from the convention, acutely so, maybe a bit before that. to take whatever sound bite of the day is and to build a narrative around that. that doesn't reenforce the larger one for the romney campaign. look, the american public is well aware of the economic situation our nation is in. it's a recovery, but the slowest and least satisfied since the great depression. someth

really understand where mitt romney stands on the issues. he talked about not taxing the wealthy. now he says he will tax the wealthy. he talks about energy independence now but didn't support the president on his programs to create alternative forms of energy for our country, which this president did. he talks about tax changes to help business development. who did that? president obama, with 100% tax credit in manufacturing, for example, which has just sizzled across the industrial midwest with the business start-ups that we see. even art furnaces being installed on the ohio republic steel. we haven't seen this in two decades. so, he can talk as a candidate, but the president has done it in a very difficult situation that he inherited from the bush administration, where the whole country's economy collapsed because of those titans up on wall street that tied up the finances of this country, and literally, we've had the largest transfer of wealth in american history from main street to wall street. you think that mitt romney, who was a part of that culture, is going to change anything f

his tax returns, saying that wasn't the issue that mattered the most. do you think the president is addressing the issues that are most important in this campaign? >> i think our president has done a fundamental -- a phenomenal job addressing those issues. let me correct. it was not meant to be a criticism. it was correcting all of us to make sure we stay focused on the message where the american people are. we want to hear about jobs. we want to hear about health care. we want to hear about those things that are really right in front of the american people today. the president certainly got on that stage in charlotte and did exactly what we all expected and knew he could do. that was to bring the issues right to the american people. >> let me ask but this group called mayors against illegal guns. you're out with a new ad featuring a survivor of the aurora movie theater shooting, asking candidates to address the issue of gun control at the debate. how likely do you think that is? how likely do you think this shooting, the shooting of a u.s. congresswoman, the subject comes up when t
